SEGUI LE ORME - STEP BY STEP
27 - CHIESA DI SANT'EMILIANO
(Saint Emiliano Church)
You are
now on the top of the hill you have admired from the plain. According to an
old legend, in this point there was the temple of the goddess Diana Trivia,
demolished by S. Feliciano in order to build a church dedicated to the Holy
Trinity. This church was later dedicated to Saint Emiliano, first bishop of
the Trevi Christian Community. He was martyred in 303, at the time of
Diocleziano. The church was enlarged in the XV century and again at the end
of the XIX century. Main façade: a beautiful renaissance portal (end of the
XV century), with an elegant cornice that incorporates an old roman
tombstone, visible on the right. On the triangular timpano is refigured S.
Emiliano among the lions. This timpano was originally located upon an altar,
in the centre of the main square, where the new priests celebrated their
first mass. There are also paintings. Lateral façade: on the top of
the closed portal (1400) you can see a marble statuette refiguring S.
Emilano (maybe XII century). The three apses, remains of the XII century
church, are the most elegant of the whole region.
