SEGUI LE ORME - STEP BY STEP
26 - PALAZZO LUCARINI (Lucarini Palace)
The
main portal (XVI century), arched and with lintel, is decorated with the
coat of arms of the Lucarini and Valenti families. The other, larger, was
built in 1600. The windows (1600) are plastered, with some stone
decorations. This palace incorporated a little mediaeval part of the city,
with its little houses and streets; it was property of one of the Trevi
noblest families. The most famous member of this family was Virgilio
Lucarini, who left his heritage (in Trevi and Rome) to institute a school
for the joung people of Trevi to study gratis. The college has been in this
palace until 1832 when, due to the damages caused by the earthquake, was
temporarily transferred in the Manenti palace and then in the convent of
Saint Francesco. Lucarini entrusted the Confraternita delle Stimmate with
the management of the school, and the Confraternita kept it until the
Piemontese occupation. This brotherhood was composed of 33 Friars, all of
them noble, whose duty consisted also in visiting the cemetery every Holy
Friday, dressed in a hemp. When they died their corpse had to lie, dressed
in the simplest habit, upon a table in the centre of the church… and the
people whispered that noble people suffered just after their death! |
