Both the façade and the interior reveal a radical neoclassical reworking; the presence in Trevi in 1832 of the famous architect Giuseppe Valadier may well have had something to do with it. Even the iron railings you see here on either side of the door have their story. Until not so very long ago, in the morning, the unemployed used to sit on them, waiting and hoping for an offer of work. In the afternoon, though, gossips sat on the left, and cuckolds on the right: or so at least female passers-by used to claim. When those condemned to die were led along this street to the place of their execution, they would try to hang on to these same railings in order to obtain sanctuary and immunity. |
