Short tour itinerary
SEGUI LE ORME - STEP BY STEP
13 - TORRIONE CIRCOLARE - (Circular Fortified Tower)
We are in the second surrounding wall. Built in the XIII century, it has been filled at the end of the XIX century. From here you can enjoy a magnificent panorama: in front of you, you will see the convent of S. Martino and, from right to left, the mount Serano, the mount Brunette and the Subasio. At the base of this last one you will see Foligno and then Spello, Assisi, Bastia and Ponte San Giovanni. |

On
your left you can admire, on the top of the hill, Montefalco and, on its
right, if the sky is very clean, you will be able to see Perugia. The
next triangular fortified tower, on the left, is called “il torrione
della Neve” (the snow tower). The problem of having ice for the whole
year was solved by the ancient Trevani by using this tower, situated to
the very north of the hill. When it snowed the Trevani filled it with
snow, alternated with layers of straw, so that even in summer they had
ice, very important not just to make ice-creams (!) but mainly – and
this was the main point to the city council - to cure the sick people.
If you turn yourselves toward the city you can see the monument
dedicated to the ex-alumni of the Collegio Lucarini who died in the
First World War.
In
the old time it was not easy, to poor and honest maids, to find an
husband. If they had no dowry at all, the marriage would probably remain
a dream for all their life. An evidence of it is the large number of
dowry given by the charity brotherhoods. A way to make marriages easier
was offered by an ancient pagan tradition that took place during the eve
of S. Ambrogio (December the 7) and S. Giovanni
(June the 24). The women of Trevi, especially the spinsters, used
to make a night procession through the countryside, during which men had
the chance to appreciate the beauty of the maids… and sometimes, for
some girl, an “accident” would have led directly to the marriage. This
tradition was abandoned in 1572 when Ugo Boncompagni, who had fiercely
fought against it, became Pope with the name Gregorio XIII (the Pope who
reformed the calendar). This
peculiar procession left from the door of the Cancelli, down here on the
right, and arrived to the church of Pietrarossa that is located on the
other side of the Flaminia street, near that group of industrial
buildings. This church deserves a visit. |
